Christopher Lloyd

Most gardeners just do. A few write as well. Christopher Lloyd was an English flower gardener and columnist whose definitive books were entitled The Mixed Border and The Well-Tempered Garden. I have not yet seen his only title to focus on shrub succession, Shrubs and Trees for Small Gardens. A picture book, Succession Planting for Year-round Pleasure (Portland, Timber Press, 2005), which was apparently compiled by an editor, drawing on Lloyd's many magazine and newspaper articles, appeared the year before he died. Lloyd (see the Wikipedia article) was a practitioner of the labour-intensive mixed-border garden, but some of his succession ideas are useful in an all-seasons shrub garden as well. His Great Dixter garden near London is open to the public.
