Describes the blossoms and colour week by week, year by year, in a Zone 8 northern European shrub garden
Aster Week
Of course it's not just any any asters we have been waiting all this time for, but Aster novae-angliae, a species that refuses to participate in spring blooming and that treacherously harbours slugs and snails all summer long before compensating us in 2006/39 with its autumn flowering. High pink ones under the Rudbeckia at the driveway look particularly effective. Lower blue ones on the side bank add colour, but should remain limited in number. A cutting from the Salix caprea was moved to the front bank, where it was looking peaky but will survive.
